Silence and Motion

Final Fantasy VIII

Silence and Motion is an incidental music piece from the video game Final Fantasy VIII (for PlayStation). It is heard in the Esthar briefly, prior to the Lunar Cry. A pity it isn’t heard again thereafter.

This arrangement is of intermediate difficulty level, about grade 8 or 9 under the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM).

Special thanks to user Verdegrand for suggesting to me to compose endings to my piano arrangements of looping incidental music.

My suggestion to performers would be to play the Coda when one feels ready to end the piece. Or perhaps you may choose to come up with your own ending. Either way, I will leave it to the discretion of the performer.

The right hand often plays the smooth melodic line together with staccato intervals from the middle accompanying voice. This middle voice is shared between the hands. The left hand often needs to jump from the bass notes to the middle voice notes, so extra attention has to be given there.

I have decided to incorporate pedal usage only in the middle section to create contrast in texture from the first section. Also, it becomes unfeasible to keep the same texture due to excessive voice overlapping and the problem of maximum hand stretch.
